FORT MYERS, Fla. – The University of Toledo women's tennis team opened its 2022 season at the Florida Gulf Coast Weekend Kickoff Friday, falling to the host Eagles 5-2.
"We are fortunate enough to be able to get this kind of competition outside so early in the year," head coach
Tracy Mauntler said. "FGCUÂ is a great team and played well."
In doubles play, Toledo's duo of sophomore
Cassie Alcala and junior
Sloane Teske defeated their FGCU opponents on the No. 1 court. However, FGCU won on both courts No. 2 and 3 capturing the doubles point.
Alcala and Teske also won on the singles courts. Alcala defeated Isabella Colmenares (6-3, 6-1) on the No. 1 court and Teske defeated Emma Bardet (6-2, 2-6, 6-3) on court No. 2. Sophomore
Shalini Tallamraju won the second set in her match, but could not get the win on the No.4 court, falling in the third set, 6-2.
"The thing I know about my team is that they are uber competitive and hate losing," said Mauntler. "So, I expect them to take the lessons from this match and learn from them."
The Rockets will stay in Fort Myers to play Liberty on Sunday, Jan. 16 at 10:00 a.m. before heading back to Toledo for their home-opener at Twos Athletic Club with Youngstown State on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 1:00 p.m.
