TOLEDO, Ohio – University of Toledo women's tennis sophomore Cassie Alcala has been named the Mid-American Conference's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Alcala had an excellent weekend at ITA Midwest Regionals in both singles and doubles play. Teaming up with junior Sloane Teske, Alcala helped Toledo advance to the ITA Super Regionals for the first time ever under the current format. Alcala and Teske defeated a doubles tandem from Illinois State to begin the day on Saturday, then toppled the No. 1-seeded duo from Ohio State to advance to Super Regionals, which marked the Rockets' first-ever win over a No. 1 seed at an ITA event. In singles play, Alcala was the highest-seeded Toledo player and advanced to the Round of 32, defeating her opponent from DePaul in straight sets.
Alcala currently owns a 3.967 GPA as a business major.
Toledo will play at home this weekend in the Rocket Invite, with matches scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
