CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Sophomore Cassie Alcala and junior Sloane Teske of the University of Toledo women's tennis team advanced to the ITA Midwest Super Regionals after defeating the No. 1 doubles seed on Saturday.
Alcala and Teske defeated Illinois State's Tijana Zlatanovic and Maria Potsi to begin the day on Saturday, then topped the No. 1-seeded Madeline Atway and Shelly Bereznyak from Ohio State (8-4) to advance to super regionals.

defeating the No. 1 doubles seed, 8-4.
This marks the first time under the current ITA Regionals format that Toledo has sent any student-athletes, singles or doubles, to ITA Midwest Super Regionals, which will be held in Columbus on Oct. 22-26. This is also the first victory for the Rockets over a No. 1 seed at an ITA Regionals event.
"Sloane and Cassie beat two great teams today," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "These two get better every time they step on the court together."
Elsewhere in doubles play, the sophomore tandem of Julia Kuszynski and Shalini Tallamraju were knocked off by Notre Dame's Maeve Koscielski and Maria Olivia Castedo, but the two Rockets made a nice run in the consolation bracket. They defeated Valparaiso's Claire and Olivia Czerwonka, 8-1.
Toledo battled hard in singles play, but was unable to advance anyone past the Round of 32. Alcala fell to Notre Dame's Julia Andreach (7-5, 6-4), Teske was outlasted by Illinois' Josie Frazier (4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), and Tallamraju dropped her contest against Michigan's Julia Fliegner (6-2, 6-3), the tournament's No. 1 seed in singles.
In the consolation bracket, Kuszynski advanced to the quarterfinals (6-7 (7-5), 7-6 (7-4), [10-5]) after a win against Chicago State's Sofiya Sedovich.
"We really battled in singles, but came up short against some really solid opponents," Mauntler said. "I'm happy with our improvements and maturity on the court so far this tournament."
While they have already punched their ticket to Super Regionals, Alcala and Teske will compete in doubles again on Sunday for seeding purposes.
