KENT, Ohio – Toledo battled hard against Kent State on Saturday but came up on the short end in both ends of a doubleheader against the preseason Mid-American Conference favorites. The two teams will square off again tomorrow in another twinbill set to begin at noon.
The Rockets (10-8, 0-2 MAC) battled back from a 7-1 deficit in the nightcap with a six-run sixth inning to even the score. UT could not plate the go-ahead run, however, with Kent State (5-10, 2-0 MAC) winning the game thanks to a two-out walk-off grand slam.
"Just when the day looked lost we got up off the deck and had a huge inning to tie the score," said Head Coach
Joe Abraham about his team's rally in the second game. "After we couldn't push anything across in the seventh, they led off with a great bunt that proved to be the winning run."
The opener saw the Rockets take a pair of two-run leads in the third and fifth innings. Each time the Golden Flashes answered and took the lead for good with a five-run fifth.
"We had a couple of leads in the first game but Kent State's hitters just kept coming at us," Abraham said. "Their power hitters connected several times and launched four or five balls to deep left field. We have to find a way to hold them down tomorrow."
Senior
Dayna Denner led Toledo offensively with four hits on the day, while freshman
Lexi Eckman registered a 3-for-4, two-RBI outing in the second game.
GAME ONE
- Toledo took a 2-0 lead in the third on Leah Munson's run-scoring single to center and Macey Moore's sacrifice fly.

GAME TWO
- Kent State took a 3-0 lead in the first on Brenna Brownfield's homer to center.

- After falling behind 7-1, the Rockets batted around in the sixth and scored six runs to knot the contest.
- Toledo drove KSU starter Gabbie Sherman from the game following a Denner double and singles from Aubrey Reed and Riley Mohr.
