Scafaria Nets Seventh in UT’s Loss to ISU

Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo women's soccer team (3-3-1) fell 2-1 today to Illinois State (3-4-2) in its final non-conference home match of the season. The Rockets got on the board first thanks to senior captain Hannah Scafaria, who netted her seventh of the year.

"Hannah Scafaria getting us on the scoreboard first was awesome, but I think we let them off the hook," head coach TJ Buchholz said. "We had them pinned in. Then they scored an equalizer and battled back later in the first half to get a second goal. We just couldn't get a second one on our side. We had plenty of chances and we got looks, but we just have to be better in the final third. We're getting all the opportunities to create and score goals but something's out of sync. We have to fix that because conference starts next week."

Both teams started the match hot, with each side putting solid chances up. UT quickly got to the dangerous areas thanks to Scafaria putting a shot on frame and freshmen Ashton Cassel sending in three corners. Despite the chances, Toledo couldn't get past ISU goalkeeper Haley Smith.

The Rockets opened the scoring in the 28th minute when sophomore Sophia Lewis found Scafaria down the left touchline. The setup allowed Scafaria to run in close and slot it to Smith's right to make things 1-0 Toledo.

The Redbirds quickly responded in the 33rd minute though when Mikayla Unger broke open at the top of the 18-yard box and fired a laser down the middle, registering her second goal of the season.

Illinois State earned its second marker of the match four minutes before halftime. Alix McArthur found space in close to UT's goalkeeper Katie Wilson, received the ball from Unger, and slotted it for her second of the year.

The second half saw both attacking sides continue to get after it but the defenses shut down every chance. The Rockets ended the day with 13 shots (four SOG) and one save to ISU's 10 shots (three SOG) and three saves.
