Toledo, Ohio - Paul Smith has been promoted to associate head coach of the University of Toledo women's soccer team, UT head coach TJ Buchholz announced today. Smith has spent the previous three seasons serving as an assistant coach.
"I'm really excited and humbled by this promotion," Smith said. "TJ, (Senior Associate Athletic Director) Kelly Andrews and (Vice-President and Athletic Director) Mike O'Brien have been so empowering of me as an assistant and employee here at UT. I love coming in everyday and getting to work with our student-athletes. I look forward to continuing to move the program forward in all areas.
"Ever since TJ called to tell me we were heading to Toledo, it has been an outstanding journey," Smith added. "Toledo has been the perfect opportunity and then some. The players, facilities, leadership, support staff, and resources are just tremendous. There is great momentum with the Toledo women's soccer program both internally and externally and it's an exciting time to be a Rocket."
"We are very excited to promote Paul to the associate head coach position," Buchholz said. "His loyalty and commitment have been invaluable to our program's success. Paul is outstanding, and he's someone that really excels in his on-field training of our team. He is incredibly good at what he does and he sees the value in being here at Toledo. Paul believes in what we are doing, and the vision we have laid out for our program. I am very thankful to have him at Toledo and he is very deserving of this promotion."
During his three-year tenure, Smith has helped build the Rockets into a championship squad. This past season, Toledo captured its fifth Mid-American Conference championship, the first since 2011. In the MAC Tournament, Toledo knocked off Western Michigan, Ball State and Bowling Green by identical 2-1 scores to take the MAC title, UT's final two victories coming in overtime. Toledo posted a 12-8-3 overall record and a 6-3-2 league mark en route to its league-best fifth NCAA Championship appearance.
Smith has also played a pivotal role in the academic success of the Rockets. Five Rockets earned a perfect 4.0 grade-point average during the 2018 spring semester, with a total of 14 being named to the Dean's List. The women's soccer program as a whole registered a 3.570 spring GPA as well.
Smith's promotion comes days before the Rockets play their regular-season opener. UT opens the 2018 campaign on the road at Xavier this Friday at 7:00 p.m. before traveling to Wright State on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. matchup.
