SOUTH BEND, IN – Toledo dropped a 74-39 decision at No. 3 Notre Dame on Wednesday in non-conference action at Purcell Pavilion. With the loss, the Rockets fall to 0-2 on the season.
UT was limited to 23.7 percent (14-of-59) from the field, including 11.8 percent (2-of-17) from three-point range, and 64.3 percent (9-of-14) from the free throw line to fall to 3-19 against nationally ranked opponents since 1995-96.
Senior Brenae Harris, junior Sophie Reecher and redshirt freshman Mikaela Boyd led the Midnight Blue & Gold with eight points each. Reecher added a team-high six rebounds and a career-best three steals in today's midweek contest.
Kathryn Westbeld paced the Fighting Irish with a game-high 13 points, followed by Madison Cable with 11 and Lindsay Allen had 10, respectively.
The home squad also received solid bench play from Arike Ogunbowale and Taya Reimer, who combined for 17 points and seven caroms to help them outscore the UT reserves 32-17.
The teams traded baskets at the outset before Notre Dame went on a mini 6-0 burst to claim a 13-7 lead at the 2:49 mark in the first quarter. It proved to be a lead the Fighting Irish would not relinquish.
UT fought back though, on the strength of consecutive field goals from Boyd to make the score 14-11 at the end of the opening period.
The Rockets continued to fight hard in the second period and received layups from freshman Kaayla McIntyre and Reecher to trim the deficit to 19-15 at the 5:01 mark in the quarter.
Unfortunately for the Midnight Blue & Gold, they would be held to only two points over the remainder of the half and trailed 29-17 at the break. The Rockets were only able to muster a pair of charity tosses over the final five-plus minutes in the period.
On the other end of the court, ND's Westbeld converted a pair of layups in the final two minutes to give the home team a 12-point advantage at intermission.
After scoring the first two points in the third period, the Fighting Irish took advantage of a game-sealing 17-0 run to open up a 44-19 lead at the 2:47 mark. Five different ND players tallied points during this time, including a team-high six from Cable to put the game out of reach.
UT ended the scoring drought with a pair of field goals from senior Ana Capotosto in the closing moments of the period to make the difference 48-28 after 30 minutes of play.
Toledo was not able to pull any closer in the final period as Notre Dame emptied its bench, dropped its second-straight game to start the year for the first time since 2006-07.
The Rockets will return to the hardwood this weekend when they travel to Rhode Island for the URI Tip-Off Classic. The Rockets will battle America East Conference member Albany in the first round on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 3:00 p.m. in the Thomas M. Ryan Center. UT will then take on either host Atlantic-10 Conference member Rhode Island or Ivy League participant Harvard on Sunday, Nov. 22 at either Noon or 3:00 p.m.
