Rocket Walk-on Kicker Makes it Into Sports Illustrated...as a Photographer

TOLEDO - Like most football players, Andrew Weber has always dreamed of having his photograph in Sports Illustrated. The only difference is, Weber takes the photos. And unlike most college football players, his dream actually came true.

Weber, a University of Toledo sophomore from Perrysburg, had one of his photographs, a two-page spread of Stafon Johnson's game-winning touchdown from last Saturday's Ohio State-USC game, appear in the "Up Front" section of this week's SI. Weber, a walk-on who is listed as the team's fourth-string kicker, was in uniform for Toledo's 54-38 victory over Colorado on Friday, then drove down to Columbus on Saturday as a stringer for Presswire, a photographic agency that sells photos to magazines and newspapers.

"It's a high point for me," said Weber, who has had smaller baseball photos published in Sports Illustrated but nothing as big as this week's issue. "I was shocked when I found out. I didn't know what to say."

Weber, a marketing major at UT, is seeking a career as a photojournalist. It's clear he's off to a good start. "A lot of photographers try their whole lives to get a photo this big in SI," he said. "I was just in the right place at the right time."

Weber will be back in uniform for this Saturday's game against, you guessed it, the Ohio State Buckeyes. No camera in his hands this time, though. Just a kicking tee.
