Toledo Loses to Kent State, 10-3

TOLEDO, OH - Toledo (5-13, 0-2 MAC) dropped a 10-3 decision to Kent State (13-7, 2-0 MAC) in Mid-American Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Scott Park.
Senior C Dan Ruth (2-for-3, run scored) and sophomore RF Joel Visser (2-for-4, RBI) led the UT offense with multi-hit contests.
The Rockets opened the scoring in the second inning with two runs on three hits. After junior 3B Dan Stong drew a walk, Ruth belted a double into the gap in right-center to put runners at second and third and one out. Sophomore DH Ryan Laude came through with a single to drive in Stong and collect his second RBI of the season. Visser then singled up the middle to drive in Ruth and give the home team a quick 2-0 lead.
KSU quickly retaliated in the third frame with four runs and the aid of a pair of hit batsmen. Andrew Davis laced a two-run bases loaded single up the middle, followed by run-scoring hits from Kurt Eichorn and Will Vasquez.
UT cut the lead to 4-3 in the fifth frame on a RBI single by freshman Jake Swint, before KSU reestablished a two-run cushion in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Joe Tucker, 5-3.
The Golden Flashes the put the game away in the seventh tallying three runs on three hits. KSU sent nine batters to the plate against three UT pitchers to establish an 8-3 advantage.
KSU added insurance runs in the eighth and ninth innings to make the final score, 10-3.
UT LHP Joe Welsh (0-4) took the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) on eight hits in six innings of action.
Chris Carpenter (3-1) earned the win for the Golden Flashes, allowing three runs on nine hits with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings.
The two teams will wrap up their three-game series tomorrow with a single game starting at 1:00 p.m.
