Toledo, OH - Toledo (20-33, 4-17 MAC) dropped both ends of a doubleheader (6-1, 1-0) this afternoon to Buffalo (25-23, 11-10 MAC) at Scott Park.
With the two victories, the Bulls remained in contention, along with Marshall and Miami, for the final spot in the six-team MAC Tournament. Buffalo will be the sixth seed if Marshall (31-26, 12-11 MAC) loses its single game to Kent State (25-18, 14-6 MAC) and Miami (20-24, 12-9 MAC) loses both games of its doubleheader to Northern Illinois (14-39, 6-16 MAC) tomorrow afternoon.
Buffalo jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opener on a two-run triple from junior Melissa Pace. The Bulls then added one run in the second on an RBI single from senior Marce Ross and then exploded for a three-hit, three-run fourth inning. Ross and junior Ann Magur each drove in a run and freshman Mary Russell crossed the plate on an error by Toledo's Kristin DuVall.
Toledo's only run of the game came in the bottom of the fifth when junior Kate Moxim's single to center drove in freshman Erica Singer.
Freshman pitcher Sophie Barstad went the distance for the Bulls, allowing just four hits and striking out four. Junior Kim Pettitt suffered the loss, allowing four hits and three runs in three innings before being replaced by freshman Stephanie Moore.
The second game saw the Rockets no-hit by junior Stacey Evans as the Bulls posted a 1-0 victory. Moore took the loss for Toledo despite allowing just three hits and one run in five innings of work.
The only scoring came with one out in the top of the fourth inning when Magur belted her third home run of the season. Junior Stacey Evans (Collinsville, IL/Triad) shut the Rockets down, pitching the first no-hitter of her career and tying her career high with 12 strikeouts.
Toledo wraps up its 2004 campaign on Sunday, May 9 with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader vs. Eastern Michigan at Scott Park.
