KALAMAZOO, MI - Toledo (7-14, 2-3 MAC) let a two-run lead in the ninth inning slip away this afternoon in its 10-9 loss to Western Michigan (10-12, 2-0 MAC) at chilly Hyames Field. The Broncos' Adam Rosales belted a three-run home run off UT freshman RHP Greg Gompf to seal the victory.
Dan O'Brien (1-3) earned the win in relief for the Broncos, while the Rockets' Gompf (1-3) suffered the loss.
Seniors Chris Arvay (2-for-4, run scored) and Sean Dobson (2-for-4, 2 RBI, run scored) paced the Rockets' attack with two hits apiece.
Toledo opened the second game of the three-game series, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Western Michigan then tallied three runs in the third off UT junior starter J.R. Duffey to take a 3-2 advantage. Duffey went seven strong innings for the Rockets, allowing five runs on nine hits with eight strikeouts.
The Rockets knotted the contest at 4-4 in the fifth on an RBI by Dobson and regained the lead in the sixth plating four runs, including a three-run home run by senior DH Aaron Rouser, to build a 7-3 cushion. The Broncos trimmed Toledo's lead in the bottom of the sixth and seventh with single runs to bring the home team within 7-5.
Toledo continued to mount an attack with single runs in the eighth and the ninth, but it was not enough as Western Michigan plated two runs of their own in the eighth and three in its final at-bat on the home run to send the Rockets home with their second-consecutive loss.
The two teams will wrap up their three-game series tomorrow with a single contest beginning at 1:00 p.m.
