KALAMAZOO, MI - Toledo (7-13, 2-2 MAC) saw its three-game win streak snapped today, dropping the opener of its Mid-American Conference series with Western Michigan (9-12, 1-0 MAC) by a 9-2 margin at Hyames Field.
The Rockets fell behind early as the Broncos jumped out to a 6-0 lead to chase junior starter Kurt Woeste (1-3) in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Western Michigan then added three runs in the sixth to build a nine-run cushion.
UT attempted to rally though and clawed back with two runs in the eighth. Senior reserve OF Aaron Rouser accounted for the Rockets' first run with a RBI single. Later in the frame, sophomore 3B Dan Stong laced a RBI single into left-center to make the final 9-2.
Stong (2-for-4, RBI) and senior SS Chris Arvay (2-for-4) led the UT offense with multi-hit contests.
J.R. Mathes (4-1) earned the win for the Broncos, allowing seven hits with eight strikeouts in a complete-game effort.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow in a 1:00 p.m. contest. The series finale will take place on Sunday, April 4, also at 1:00 p.m.
