TOLEDO, OH - Toledo (7-12) posted its third-straight victory and its seventh in the last 10 games today with a 12-11 come-from-behind triumph against Oakland (5-12) at rainy Scott Park.
Seniors Sean Dobson (3-for-5, 2 runs scored), Shawn Hurst (3-for-5, 3 RBI, 2 runs scored) and Aaron Rouser (3-for-5, 2 RBI, run scored) paced the Rockets' attack with three hits apiece.
All nine Rocket starters recorded at least one hit with three other UT players - seniors Doug Yoder (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Chris Arvay (2-for-4, 2 runs scored, RBI) and sophomore Dan Stong (2-for-4) notching multi-hit efforts.
Toledo trailed 8-1 after three-and-a-half innings but scored four in the fourth, four in the fifth and two in the sixth to take a 11-8 advantage. However, the Golden Grizzlies plated three runs in the seventh to knot the score.
In the ninth, redshirt freshman DH Phil Masser led off, reaching base on a throwing error by the Oakland third baseman. Stong then perfectly executed a sacrifice bunt to advance Masser to second. Dobson was intentionally walked to set up a double-play situation for the Golden Grizzlies, but a wild pitch by Oakland reliever Scott Boleski with Hurst at the plate put runners at the corners. OU decided to intentionally walk Hurst to load the bases and put a force at each corner of the diamond. But junior C/1B Dan Ruth was hit by a pitch forcing in the winning run.
Freshman RHP Greg Gompf (1-2), the last of five pitchers utilized by the Rockets, pitched two shutout innings of relief work to pick up his first victory of the season.
Boleski (0-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing one run on four hits in 2.1 innings of action.
Toledo will return to action tomorrow afternoon, when the Rockets travel to Dayton, OH to take on the Wright State Raiders at 3:00 p.m.
