Tami Johnston is a softball letterwinner from 1984-87. She was a dominating force on the mound throughout her career and was the main reason for UT's turnaround from a last-place team to a first-place team in a two-year period. Johnston ranks 2nd in career wins (71), 1st in ERA (0.57), 1st in strikeouts (842), 4th in starts (101), 2nd for appearances (132), 1st for innings (789) and 1st in winning percentage (.703). She also set many MAC season records along the way, including 239 strikeouts in 1986. She topped that total with 279 in 1985, while shutting out 20 teams. Johnston's career 43 shutouts ranks 2nd in the conference. During her career at UT, she led the team to a conference title and two second-place finishes in the MAC. In addition, the Rockets posted an overall record of 138-86-1 and a league record of 41-20-1 during her tenure. Johnston was honored as an All-MAC player three consecutive years and the first Mideast All-Region selection for UT. "I still attribute much of our success today to the fact that Tami Johnston put the University of Toledo on the map," says head softball coach Cheryl Sprangel. "She was a coach's dream come true to a young program. It was an honor to coach a player with so much talent. She had a pleasing personality and was well liked and respected by her teammates." Not only was she an excellent softball pitcher, Johnston was an outstanding young lady. Her talent was something she built on everyday throughout her collegiate career by taking pride in workouts and games at The University of Toledo. "The support of my family and my teammates gave me the strength to accomplish what I did," says Johnston. "I owe it all to them."
