Robert Caverly was a three-year starter for the Rockets from 1968-1970. Caverly was a part of an offensive unit that ranked first in the MAC in both rushing (229.2 ypg) and total offense (372.4 ypg). He was one of the many unsung heroes who unselfishly gave his heart to the Rocket program while watching others gain the fame. Bob Caverly's hard work was what allowed others to set records and become Hall of Famers. Named to the second-team All-MAC in 1969, Caverly improved upon this with a first-team all-conference selection in 1970. A former UT offensive line coach perfectly captured Caverly's contribution when he said, "Bob never scored a touchdown or threw a pass, but without his work the records that were set in those years would not exist today, nor would the victories that were recorded have been a part of history." Never missing a game or practice because of injury, Bob Caverly exemplified the truly unselfish player whose worth cannot be underestimated. Caverly married his high school sweetheart, Judy Behrendt, and was a Distinguished Military Graduate in 1971. He then served for more than 20 years as a commissioned officer in the United States Army's Aviation Branch, attending both the Command and General Staff College and Flight and Test Pilot Training before retiring in Toledo.
