Murray Guttman earned six varsity letters as a two sport star in basketball and baseball. As a senior, Guttman served as the captain of the basketball team while leading the Rockets in scoring with 17.7 points per game. He also earned second-team All-MAC honors. In one of the biggest wins in University of Toledo basketball history, Guttman poured in 37 points against ninth-ranked Niagara University in the Field House. He drained a 40-foot shot to propel the Rockets to a two-point victory. He set a school record of 17 field goals as the Rockets were completing one of its biggest upsets in history-his record remains fifth. That same year, he netted 33 points against Marshall.

Guttman garnered All-MAC honors three times in baseball. He served as the Rockets' captain his senior season and was named second-team All-MAC. The Blade described him as "the top hurler in the league." He had one of the lowest ERAs in UT history (3.43). Along with MAC recognition, his outstanding performance as a Rocket resulted in him being awarded NCAA All-Region honors. Currently, Guttman is ranked tied for fourth for shutouts (2) and tied for ninth in wins (8). In 1956-57, Guttman was the annual leader for victories (3, 8), and strikeouts (32, 70)  

After graduating, Guttman played for the minor league organizations of the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds. He has served as the athletic director of the Jewish Community Center since the early 1970s and was one of the first Jewish athletes to play intercollegiate sports in Toledo.
