Mike Karabin earned two letters as a catcher in baseball in 1977 and 1978. As a senior in 1978, Karabin became the first Rocket to win a MAC batting championship with an average of .419, a mark that ranks him fifth on the UT all-time list for batting average in a season. Karabin later was head baseball coach at UT for the 1982 season, leading the team to a second-place finish in the MAC. He was also the assistant baseball coach from 1979-1981 and from 1983-1987. After graduating, Karabin signed with the Chicago Cubs, playing in their minor league system for two seasons. He has been an administrator at UT since 1979, serving as promotions director (1979-87), director of marketing and development (1987-91), assistant athletic director (1991-97), associate athletic director (1997-2001), interim athletic director (2001) and senior associate athletic director (2002-present).
