Jim Brown, a 6-9 center, scored 829 points and captured 790 rebounds in a three-year Rocket varsity career. He was named Second-Team All-MAC in 1974 and Honorable Mention All-MAC as well as captain during his 1974-75 season. Playing in 78 varsity games, he averaged a “double-double” of points/rebounds (10.6/10.1) for his entire career. Brown’s career field goal percentage (56.0%) is the third-highest in Rocket history. He also ranks third in field goal percentage in MAC games (56.5), seventh in rebounding average (10.1) and MAC play rebounding average (9.8), and eighth in rebounds (790) during his career. Brown is ranked third in rebounds (349) as well as, sixth in rebounding average (12.5) in his 1973-74 season and tied for tenth in field goal percentage (59.1) in 1972-73. He is tied for first for most field goals in MAC games (90.9) and tied for third in field goal percentage vs. Kent State on February 10, 1973. Brown is ranked tied for fifth in rebounds in MAC games (21) vs. Western Michigan on January 16, 1974. He was also an annual leader in 1972-75 for rebounds per game (59.1, 55.2, 54.9), and field goal percentage in 1973-75 (12.5, 10.8). He averaged 8.2 points and 7.0 rebounds as a sophomore, 11.6 points and 12.5 rebounds as a junior, and 11.8 points and 10.5 rebounds as senior. Brown also had strong shot-blocking ability, which keyed the Rocket press and fast break (shot-blocking statistics were not recorded in Brown’s era). Brown was named as the team MVP in his junior year in 1973-74. That season, UT went 19-9 and participated in the Conference Commissioner’s Tournament (CCT) in St. Louis after finishing second in the MAC. In the CCT, UT defeated Arizona State and lost by one point in overtime to Bobby Knight’s Indiana Hoosiers in the semi-finals. Brown later played two years of professional basketball in Tenerifa, Canary Islands, Spain. Brown passed away in 2012.
