As an assistant football coach from 1964-71, Dave Hardy was undoubtedly one of the most important factors in the sucess of the Rocket program. A former halfback at The University of Toledo (1942, 46-47), Hardy joined UT's coaching staff after a highly successful stint at the high school level. An offensive line coach at UT for three years, Hardy became the offensive coordinator in 1967, helping the Rockets post a 9-1 record and their first Mid-American Conference championship. Over his 5-year term as an offensive coordinator, the Rockets were 49-5-1, including an amazing run of 35 straight victories from 1969-71. His entire 16-year high school coaching career was spent at Toledo DeVilbiss, the first 10 as an assistant and the last six as head coach. In that time, the Tigers won eight City League Championships, three of them while Hardy was head coach. Following his tenure at UT, Hardy became the Dean of Boys at Woodward High School, retiring in 1978. A member of the DeVilbiss and Toledo City League halls of fame, he was also inducted to the Ohio High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 1995. Hardy joins his brother , Chuck, a former running back and defensive back at UT, as a member of the Varisty 'T' Hall of Fame.
