Brett Kern averaged 42.3 yards per punt in his career, almost 1.5 yards more than the next best punter in UT history. As a senior in 2007, Kern averaged an amazing 46.1 yards per punt, the best in UT history by far, and was among three finalists for the Ray Guy Award as the nation’s best punter. Kern was Toledo’s punter for four seasons, assuming the position as a freshman. He averaged 40.6 yards in his rookie season, 39.5 yards per boot as a sophomore and 41.7 yards per kick as a senior. Kern really came into his own as a senior. He finished the season ranked No. 2 in the country in punting average, earning third-team All-America honors by the Associated Press, as well as being named MAC Special Teams Player of the Year. Kern, who played in the Hula Bowl and the East-West Shrine Game, was named second-team Academic All-District with a 3.38 grade point average in geography After his Rocket career ended, Kern played in the NFL with the Denver Broncos and Tennessee Titans.
