Dr. Barney Hein played infield on The University of Toledo's first baseball team from 1907 to 1910 and was UT's team physician and consultant for a number of years. A graduate of Toledo Medical College in 1912, Dr Hein interned at St. Vincent's Hospital for a year. He did postgraduate studies at the Harvard Medical College and in 1916 attended New York Post Graduate College. Dr. Hein served in World War I overseas as head of the orthopedic department of Evacuation Hospital and participated in several military offensives. He was discharged as a captain in 1919. From the time of his enlistment, he was known in scholastic circles as an expert on bone fractures, knee injuries, separations and other accidents pertaining to athletics. In 1929, Dr. Hein served as president of the Academy of Medicine of Toledo and Lucas County and headed the Ohio State Medical Association in 1937. For eight years he served as the Ohio delegate to the American Medical Association and made several contributions to orthopedic medicine from that post. He was the Rockets' team physician in the early 1930s and also served on The University of Toledo's medical advisory board for the athletic department. Dr. Hein also treated many high school and university athletes without compensation. His involvement with UT and the community made him one of the most respected and trusted orthopedic surgeons in the state.
